Succulent Gardens and Terrariums

Course Outline

Lecture Topics:

• The popularity of succulents
• Cacti vs. Succulents – not one and the same!
• Succulents, what they are, the diversity and basic care (optimum moisture, sun, soil composition)
• Common succulent problems (rot, fungus) and how to rectify. Discarding soil, sanitizing container before re-using, Sterilizing the Soil. 

Demonstration and Hands-On Lesson: 

• Making your own succulent soil mix with potting soil, coarse sand, bark, and granite/ pumice/lava.
• Companion plants – Orchids, sedum, etc. that work well with succulents as they have similar care needs.
• Make and Take project!  You will make your own mini succulent garden or terrarium to learn the planting basics.

Materials Provided:

Apron, Gloves, Basic tools, Succulents, Supplies, Container or Terrarium. We will have extra Florist shears/pruners, wire cutters, Ribbon Shears for purchase. A recap sheet with intro info and links for further study will be provided at the end of class.
